Verify Anonymous Authentication to the Commence installation directory

The next part of the installation process for Commence is to verify that Internet Information Services (IIS) anonymous authentication is enabled for the Commence directory. This is so that the Commence installation files can be downloaded to a computer just after the boot image has been started.

To enable IIS anonymous authentication for the Commence folder:

  1. Load Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager
  2. Navigate to <server_name> (<domain_name>\<current_logged_on_user> | Sites | (<Control_Center_site_name>)

for example:

PRIMARY (CIRESON\Control Center) | Sites | ControlCenter

  1. Click to select the Commence folder.

  1. Double-click Authentication in the main window.

  1. On the Authentication screen, verify that the Status for Anonymous Authentication is Enabled

  1. If Anonymous Authentication is not enabled, right-click on it and select Enable

Information

Anonymous Authentication needs to be enabled as once Commence is started, the Commence.cab and Settings.cnf files are downloaded to the computer being PXE booted and extracted into the Windows PE environment by the WinPE pre-loader. This is a better approach than changing your Windows boot image file to add these files, as you would need to update and redistribute your boot image every time that Commence was updated.

This approach eases maintenance as if a newer version of Commence is released, updating it is simply a case of overwriting the existing Commence.cab in the Commence folder with the newer version.

  1. Verify all other authentication methods except for Anonymous Authentication are disabled (if any are enabled, simply right-click on them and select Disable).

Now you have verified anonymous authentication is enabled for your Commence installation directory, the next stage is to verify that your ConfigMgr distribution points are PXE-enabled.
